Week 12 Post
In my professional work, I've been a paraprofessional at a high school library for about three years. I'm ready to move on. I cannot grow any more in my role at my school of employment, and I'm not intending on getting the teaching endorsement. There are many reasons behind this - I won't go into the here. I've loved my time at IPPL and am truly crestfallen that it is nearing its end. To be honest, I have been stalking the Job Postings page of their website on the off chance that something matching my qualifications opens up. There had been a Communications Specialist position available recently, but that never would have been able to translate into librarian work down the line, which is truly what I'm after. However, seeing what oppertunites are out there, and talking to the full time people at IPPL about what their backgounds have been like has been encouraging. We have all come from a variety of places before landing in Librarianship. It seems like this is a common second or third or more career for a lot of people (4th for me). So with that in mind I applied for something that I didn't think that I would necessarily be qualified for. One of the assistant principals at my current employer suggested it to me - a long term sub role in an elementry school library. I'b be in charge of the day-to-day. I've had to do this at my current school when we were between librarians, so I have experiance in teaching, even if I haven't intended on going down this path permanenetly. Now, they've done a phone screener, interview, and have asked for my referances. It's nice to feel wanted instead of tapped up and dried out. The ALSC's competency 7 is about professional development, which if I get this new role will be somehting that will both need to come into play and be something that is a new constant. Movning from a high school to an elementary school will be a huge transition, but by educating myself I'll be able to rise to the challenge.
This is an interesting view. of you career, one that certainly helps you with a standard but it's an interesting choice to take a school library position without seeking an endorsement.
